Each year, on average, trenching and excavating activities account for 1,000 injured workers, 140 permanent disabilities and 54 deaths.

OSHA requires that a "Competent Person" be on your construction or maintenance site whenever workers are exposed in an excavation.

This one day class is designed to prepare the designated competent person to be able to recognize existing and predictable hazards in and around the excavation and to take appropriate corrective measures. Topics covered include critical excavation safety terminology and concepts, soils analysis, protective system options and selection, and comprehensive coverage of the requirements of Subpart P of the OSHA Excavation Standard.

How You Will Benefit From This Training
► Understand the definition of a Competent Person
► Understand the various hazards associated with trenching and excavation
► Understand Soil Classification and how to classify soils
► Learn about the various trenching and excavation protective systems

Who all needs to attend an Excavation Safety Competent Person class?

The employer must designate a competent person to oversee the safety of employees in and around the excavation. That individual must have had been trained in soils, protective systems, and in the requirements of the Excavation Standard. Additionally, it is a good idea that any other employee involved in excavation work be informed of the hazards and how to work safely. Many individuals who attend competent person training are not necessarily going to be designated as the competent person, but they are trained in order to have an increased awareness of the hazards.
